Rewind Files author Claire Willett shares a list of her favorite chrono-jumping ladies from movies, books and television!
2. River Song (from Doctor Who)
CONTROVERSIAL OPINION TIME: I love River Song. I've been a huge fan of Alex Kingston ever since I saw her in the BBC miniseries Moll Flanders when I was fifteen, and anytime she is on my TV screen my life improves immeasurably. But what elevates River to the #2 slot on my top 10 list isn't just the fact that Kingston is a tremendous actor (with spectacular hair) who puts more character nuance into the single word "sweetie" than another could do with the entire text of Hamlet. And it's not even the fact that she's that rarity of rarities, a woman over the age of 40 who still gets to be a badass, sexy action hero delivering quippy one-liners as she saves the day. For me, the thing I love most is the way the show uses River's appearances to illuminate the complexities of time travel. River's relationship with the Doctor unfolds entirely in the wrong order, bouncing back and forth in time; the first time we meet River, in "The Silence in the Library," it's also the first time the Doctor has met her - but for River, it's the end. And it just gets more twisty and mysterious from there. What's she writing in that TARDIS-shaped diary? How does she know the things she knows? Well, if you've never seen it, I won't give any more away. Spoilers.
